  • Dec 08, 2013 · This is post #8 in my December 2013 series about Linux Virtual Machine Performance Tuning. For more, please see the tag “Linux VM Performance Tuning.” According to Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux 6 Power Management guide, the POSIX family of standards for operating systems “requires that operating systems maintain file system metadata that records when each file was last accessed.”
Disk Benchmark monitors performance in hard drives, solid-state drives, RAID arrays, as well as connections to storage, allowing you to tune your storage system for optimal performance. Compatible with macOS®, ATTO Disk Benchmark measures your storage systems performance with various transfer sizes and test lengths for reads and writes.
Jul 05, 2018 · Step 1: First, let’s use the fdisk command to find out the hard disk partitions status. sudo fdisk -l. fdisk command output. You should see a few entries of RAM. For example, Disk /dev/ram15 seen in my test PC. You can ignore it as this is the RAM disk driver used by main system memory as a block device.
Without disabling it entirely, because that would go too far: in case of very heavy RAM load, your Linux has to be able to "swap" to the hard disk. Linux's inclination to use the swap, is determined by a setting called swappiness. The lower the setting number, the more system load is required before your Linux starts using the swap. Accomplished tmp files are never copied under Linux but the move is just a rename (thats why they have to be on the same file system). If you have HD performance problems you could still try a real RAM disk (module brd) and move new files with my proven bash script mvmsg to disk.
May 15, 2002 · Linux Benchmark Suite Homepage Mission. To provide a wide range of both synthetic and application benchmarks for Linux as well as information and tools to tune and run them. Introduction. This project is made up of various parties interested in measuring aspects of linux performance.
Oct 20, 2016 · The rsync test gives us the best performance we could expect, considering that the limit comes from the 100 Mbit Ethernet, we won’t be able to transfer data at higher speeds than ~10 MB/s. In this case, the usage of disk encryption isn’t making things slower.
May 28, 2020 · Phoronix Test Suite is a complete benchmark suite that curates loads of Linux benchmark tools under one umbrella with PHP scripts. Installation and Graphics Tests For information on how to install Phoronix Test Suite on your distribution and run graphics tests, check out our guide on graphics benchmarking with PTS . Tip #3: mlockall offers the biggest bang for the Elasticsearch performance efficiency buck. Linux divides its physical RAM into chunks of memory called pages. Swapping is the process whereby a page of memory is copied to the preconfigured space on the hard disk, called swap space, to free up that page of memory.

  • Consensus performance, especially commit latency, is limited by two physical constraints: network IO latency and disk IO latency. The minimum time to finish an etcd request is the network Round Trip Time (RTT) between members, plus the time fdatasync requires to commit the data to permanent storage.
Apr 09, 2008 · fio was created to allow benchmarking specific disk IO workloads. It can issue its IO requests using one of many synchronous and asynchronous IO APIs, and can also use various APIs which allow many IO requests to be issued with a single API call.

If a purely SSD storage system is too expensive, you might choose to use an SSD for one or more filesytems that you can mount where the high volume IO is occurring, and continue to use the disk for filesystems that need more data capacity and fewer IOPS. 3: Use a fast RAID array. A RAID1 array can provide better read performance than a single disk. Lastly I hope the steps from the article to improve disk IO performance on Linux was helpful. So, let me know your suggestions and feedback using the comment section. In my next article I will share the steps to change the active IO scheduler in Linux.

Jan 04, 2019 · Introduction to Linux AIO. Linux AIO exposes asynchronous disk IO to userspace software. Historically on Linux, all disk operations were blocking. Whether you did open(), read(), write() or fsync(), you could be sure your thread would stall if the needed data and meta-data was not ready in disk cache. This usually isn't a problem.
